The #1 Children's Vitamin Brand in the US contains ingredients that most parents would never intentionally expose their children to, so why aren't more opting for healthier alternatives?

Kids vitamins are supposed to be healthy, right? Well then, what's going on with Flintstones Vitamins, which proudly claims to be "Pediatricians' #1 Choice"?  Produced by the global pharmaceutical corporation Bayer, this wildly successful brand features a shocking list of unhealthy ingredients, including:
On Bayer Health Science's Flintstones product page designed for healthcare professionals they lead into the product description with the following tidbit of information:
82% of kids aren't eating all of their veggies1. Without enough vegetables, kids may not be getting all of the nutrients they need.
References: 1. Lorson BA, Melgar-Quinonez HR, Taylor CA. Correlates of fruit and vegetable intakes in US children. J Am Diet Assoc. 2009;109(3):474-478.
The implication? That Flintstones vitamins somehow fill this nutritional void. But let's look a little closer at some of these presumably healthy ingredients....
Aspartame is a synthetic combination of the amino acids aspartic acid and l-phenylalanine, and is known to convert into highly toxic methanol and formaldehyde in the body.  Aspartame has been linked to over 40 adverse health effects in the biomedical literature, and has been shown to exhibit both neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity [1]  What business does a chemical like this have doing in a children's vitamin, especially when non-toxic, non-synthetic non-nutritive sweeteners like stevia already exist?
Next, let's look closer at Cupric Oxide, 2mg of which is included in each serving of Flinstone's Complete chewable vitamins as a presumably  'nutritional' source of 'copper,' supplying "100% of the Daily Value  (Ages 4+), according to Flintstones Vitamins Web site's Nutritional Info.[2]
But what is Cupric Oxide? A nutrient or a chemical?
According to the European Union's Dangerous Substance Directive, one of the main EU laws concerning chemical safety, Cupric Oxide is listed as a Hazardous substance, classified as both  "Harmful (XN)" and "Dangerous for the environment" (N).  Consider that it has industrial applications as a pigment in ceramics, and as a chemical in the production of rayon fabric and dry cell batteries. In may be technically correct to call it a mineral, but should it be listed as a nutrient in a children's vitamin? We think not.

Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.

A well-known side effect of using synthetic dyes is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. For direct access to study abstracts on this topic view our Food Coloring research page.  There is also indication that the neurotoxicity of artificial food coloring agents increase when combined with aspartame,[3] making the combination of ingredients in Flintstones even more concerning.

Each serving of Flinstones Complete Chewable vitamins contain 12 mg of zinc oxide, which the manufacturer claims delivers 75% of the Daily Value to children 2  & 3 years of age.  Widely used as a sun protection factor (SPF) in sunscreens, The EU's Dangerous Substance Directive classifies it as an environmental Hazard, "Dangerous for the environment (N)."  How it can be dangerous to the environment, but not for humans ingesting it, escapes me.  One thing is for sure, if one is to ingest supplemental zinc, or market it for use by children, it makes much more sense using a form that is organically bound (i.e. 'chelated') to an amino acid like glycine, as it will be more bioavailable and less toxic.

Sorbitol is a synthetic sugar substitute which is classified as a sugar alcohol. It can be argued that it has no place in the human diet, much less in a child's. The ingestion of higher amounts have been linked to gastrointestinal disturbances from abdominal pain to more serious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.[4]

The one clear warning on the Flinstone's Web site concerns this chemical. While it is impossible to die from consuming iron from food, e.g. spinach, ferrous fumarate is an industrial mineral and not found in nature as food. In fact, ferrous fumarate is so toxic that accidental overdose of products containing this form is "a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6." The manufacturer further warns:
Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.

Finding hydrogenated oil in anything marketed to children is absolutely unacceptable. These semi-synthetic fatty acids incorporate into our tissues and have been linked to over a dozen adverse health effects, from coronary artery disease to cancer, violent behavior to fatty liver disease.[5]

While it can be argued that the amount of GMO corn starch in this product is negligible, even irrelevant, we disagree. It is important to hold accountable brands that refuse to label their products honestly, especially when they contain ingredients that have been produced through genetic modification. The 'vitamin C' listed as ascorbic acid in Flintstones is likely also produced from GMO corn. Let's remember that Bayer's Ag-biotech division, Bayer CropScience, poured $381,600 of cash into defeating the proposition 37 GMO labeling bill in California. Parents have a right to protect their children against the well-known dangers of genetically modified foods and the agrichemicals that contaminate them, don't they? GMO corn starch is GMO, plain and simple. We'd appreciate it if Bayer would label their "vitamins" accordingly.
In summary, Bayer's Flintstone's vitamin brand is far from a natural product, and the consumer should be aware of the unintended, adverse health effects that may occur as a result of using it.

Military Family Enlists for Early Retirement

Meet Isagenix Millionaires No. 138  Cindy & Darren!  Independent Isagenix Associate

“We had a very hectic lifestyle,” says Cindy, a former gym owner. Her husband Darren was in Special Operations in the Canadian military, and these parents of two felt rushed all the time. “Darren was away a lot,” Cindy remembers, “and we dreamed of being together more.”

About 7 1/2 years ago, Cindy’s friend Dani introduced her to Isagenix. It was an instant hit with their family. Cindy immediately saw the potential in starting an Isagenix business. So she decided to try the products.

“I had great results that I started sharing with my clients at my gym, family, and friends. And, over the course of three years, part time, I created a six-figure income.”

Cindy’s Isagenix income meant she could have an early retirement at 40, but she wanted more. She’d seen her friend Dani retire her husband and wanted to do the same for Darren. She put her mind to it and succeeded! Darren had committed 35 years of service in order to earn a full pension. He was making a very good income, but he says, “I had managed to get myself promoted to a rank where I was no longer doing the daily things I really loved about the military.”

Cindy had been asking him for several years to consider retiring, and so one day he made her a deal.
“I told her, when you replace my income, I will put in my release.” Two years later, she did just that. “While I could have walked away with 30 day’s notice, my loyalty to my team drove me to give them a year to plan my replacement.”

Darren was able to step into his new life after 26 years at 44 years old rather than at 53! “Our reason to get up in the morning now is to make sure we’re there for the kids before they go to school,” shares Darren. “And that’s probably the best part of what we do now,” he continues. He jokes that now that his kids are teenagers they don’t openly admit it, but he and Cindy know they appreciate him being home. Darren and Cindy are not afraid to admit that they are happy designing their own lives and catching up on lost time as a couple.

The Secret to Their Success At the heart of Cindy and Darren’s success are three things: goals, integrating their business into their everyday lives, and creating curiosity (rather than using sales pitches).

Early on, Cindy’s goal was retiring Darren. Their next big goal is to find a destination to retire, and relocate their family and business. Along the way, they’re also working to help their team members create their own success stories. And in the midst of all of that, they’ve managed to cumulatively earn over a million dollars with their Isagenix business. When Cindy started building the business, she was busy raising two kids, and running a gym and a household. However, she was committed to success with Isagenix, and not only fit Isagenix into the “pockets of her day,” but made her business a priority.

Eventually she hired a virtual assistant to help her let go of time-consuming tasks like sorting emails. Nowadays, says Cindy, “We don’t have set Isagenix hours. We really build it into our days.” In fact, after a recent house hunting trip Cindy says, “We have five realtors interested in what we do!” Darren elaborates, Everything we do, that we’re going to do anyway, we manage to fit Isagenix into that.” For them, that means going out of their way to meet new people when they go to the gym and making the most of their time. Another one of their secrets? Whenever they’re traveling together, even on their drive to the gym, whoever isn’t driving uses that time to catch up on emails and social media.
Darren says his focus is on creating curiosity. “Military people, police, and people like that—they don’t like to be approached with any kind of sale,” he shares. So he and Cindy can focus on getting to know people, creating curiosity, and simply sharing their 10- or 30-second story.

“People buy from people they know, like, and trust,” Cindy emphasizes. “Be passionate and genuine and most importantly, don’t be afraid to talk to people!” Anyone who knows Cindy is aware of what she calls her “2-foot” rule. “If you are within two feet of me, you are going to be talking to me,” she laughs. “I am naturally curious, and I enjoy meeting people.”

Cindy and Darren live by their motto of “Prepare. Live Life.” And now they enjoy meeting others and sharing the Isagenix opportunity every day. - See more at: ISAGENIX

20 Reasons you should Drink Lemon Water in the Morning

Adding lemon to water not only quenches thirst better than any other beverage, but it also nourishes our body with vitamins, minerals and trace elements which we absolutely need. Lemon with water can be considered the best natural energy booster. When we wake up in the morning, our bodily tissues are dehydrated and are in need of water to push out toxins and rejuvenate the cells. In other words, this homemade “lemonade” helps eliminate internal toxins, regulating proper kidney and digestive tract functions by forcing them to work as smoothly as possible.
Drink hot water with lemon first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
20 Unbelievable Reasons To Start Your Day With Water and Lemon
    1. Water with lemon provides the body with electrolytes which hydrate your body. As lemons contain good amount of electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.
    2. Water with lemon is good for the joints, reducing pain in the joints and muscles.
    3. Warm water with lemon helps digestion as lemon contains citric acid. It interacts with other enzymes and acids which easily stimulate the secretion of gastric juice and digestion.
    4. The liver produces more enzymes from water with lemon than from any other food.
    5. Water with lemon cleanses the liver. Lemon juice stimulates the liver to release toxins.
    6. Water with Lemon helps fight infections of the respiratory tract, sore throats and inflammation of the tonsils. This is due to the anti-inflammatory properties of lemon.
    7. Warm water with lemon helps regulate natural bowel movement.
    8. Water with lemon is indispensable for the normal work of metabolism. Since lemon is a powerful antioxidant, it protects the body from free radicals and strengthens the immune system.
    9. Water with lemon aids in proper functioning of the nervous system (as lemon  has a high content of potassium). Depression and anxiety are often the result of low levels of potassium in the blood. The nervous system needs a sufficient amount of potassium to ensure sustainable signals to the heart.
    10. Water with lemon cleanses blood, blood vessels and arteries.
    11. Water with lemon can help lower blood pressure.  A daily intake of one lemon can reduce high blood pressure by 10%.
    12. Water with lemon creates an alkalizing effect in the body. Even if you drink it immediately before a meal,  it can help your body maintain a higher level of pH. The higher the pH, the more your body is able to fight diseases.
    13. Water with lemon is good for the skin. Vitamin C in lemon, improves our skin by rejuvenating the body.  Drinking water with lemon regularly (every morning) will improve the condition of your skin.
    14. Water with lemon  helps to dilute uric acid, the built up of which leads to pain in the joints and gout.
    15. Water with lemon is beneficial for pregnant women. Since lemons are loaded with Vitamin C, it acts as an adaptogen helping the body cope with viruses such as colds.  Furthermore, vitamin C helps the formation of bone tissue of the unborn baby. At the same time, due to the high content of potassium, a mixture of water with lemon helps forming cells of the brain and nervous system of the baby.
    16. Water with lemon relieves heartburn. For this, mix a teaspoon of lemon juice in half a glass of water.
    17. Water with lemon helps dissolve gallstones,  kidney stones, pancreatic stones, and calcium deposits.
    18. Water with lemon helps with weight loss.  Lemons contain pectin fiber, which helps suppress hunger cravings. Studies have proven  people with a better alkaline diet have lost weight faster.
    19. Water with lemon helps with tooth pain and gingivitis.
    20. Water with lemon prevents cancer. This is due to the fact that lemons are a highly alkaline food. Multiple studies have found that cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline environment.
So, when life gives you a bunch of lemons, make water with lemons.

GREEN TEA & Caffeine May Be Good for Multiple Sclerosis!

    Green Tea & Multiple Sclerosis

Polyphenol antioxidants in green tea extract improve multiple sclerosis symptoms by inhibiting certain enzymes that promote the disease, according to a study published in the March 2011 issue of the journal “Neurochemical Research.” In the tissue culture study, nerve cells exposed to green tea extract showed lower levels of tissue-degrading matrix metalloproteinase enzymes. Researchers concluded that green tea and other foods high in polyphenol antioxidants may be a powerful tool in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Japanese researchers reported that green tea’s anti-inflammatory properties may be helpful in preventing and treating chronic inflammatory diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Green tea inhibits a compound known as tissue necrosis factor, which promotes tumor formation and inflammation. In the study on laboratory animals, four months of green tea supplementation inhibited tissue necrosis factor and interleukin, another pro-inflammatory molecule. The study was published in the April 2001 issue of the “Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.”

    Nerve Damage

Researchers at the Institute of Neuroimmunology of the Neuroscience Research Center in Berlin, Germany found that the green tea compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG, suppressed a laboratory animal form of multiple sclerosis. In the study, EGCG reduced symptoms dramatically when given at or after the onset of symptoms. EGCG also protected against nerve damage in the brain. Researchers concluded that green tea may offer a viable natural option for treating and preventing multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory brain diseases by exerting both anti-inflammatory and nerve-protective benefits.

Caffeine in green tea may improve multiple sclerosis symptoms, according to Allen C. Bowling, Ph.D., author of the book “Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis.” Caffeine counteracts fatigue and improves mental alertness. Caffeine also inhibits the activity of white blood cells and alters the activity of certain brain receptors that may prove to be beneficial for multiple sclerosis.

    Suppressive Effects

Green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate offers suppressive and protective effects against multiple sclerosis, according to Robert Luebke, editor of the book “Immunotoxicology and Immunopharmacology.” Polyphenol antioxidants in green tea inhibit the pro-inflammatory enzyme cyclooxygenase-2, or COX-2, as well as interferon and tissue necrosis factor. In animals, green tea extract inhibits relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.
